The final seniors weekly 9 hole stableford of the season was won by Ian Sloan with 24 points. The winner of the Seniors Tray for the best eight scores over the season was Heather Bantick. On Saturday, the juniors brought their season to a close competing for the Babie Douglas Trophy. Winner was Alasdair Bisset (33) 65 and runner-up was Bruce Grant (36) 69. The competition was followed by burger and chips and the juniors annual prize giving. On Sunday, the men and ladies competed for the Pat Smith Cup. Winner was David Thom (6) 63, runner-up was Kevin Strathdee (6) 66 and third was Jim O’Hara (12) 67bih. The competition was followed by a buffet and the annual prize giving. Following the final competition the winner of the Most Improved Lady Trophy was confirmed as Susan Philpott who has reduced her handicap from 35 to 31 over the season.

Week ending Sunday 7 October 2012

Sunday saw the final medal of the season for both men and ladies. The men’s competition was won by Michael Wright (13) 65, runner-up was Gordon Smith (15) 69 and third was Bob Mouat (15) 72. The ladies competition was won by Margaret Smith (23) 69, runner-up was Sheila Grant (31) 74 and third was Susan Swinden (24) 75. The final match play competition for the Heather centre Trophy was won by James Grant defeating Malcolm McCreath in the final.

Week ending Sunday 30 September 2012

Another three match play competitions were completed this week. Jim O’Hara, in his third final, partnered Pamela MacLeod to win the Bantick Trophies defeating David Thom and Dorothy McDonald. Alex Donald won the Cumming Cup defeating Bob Mouat in the final. Margaret Smith and Rona Smith won the Cairngorm Quaich defeating Marie Hughes and Jean Gordon in the final. On Sunday, the men and ladies played a Bogey competition. The winner was John Swinden (25) 3 up; runner-up was David Lindgren (16) 2 up and third was Jim Brady (14) 1 down.

Week ending Sunday 23 September 2012

On Monday, the ladies played their final monthly 9 hole stableford for the season. Winner on the night was Kate Wright(27) 18pts, runner-up was Marion McCook (29) 17 pts and third was Marie Hughes (23) 16 pts. The winner of the series with an eclectic of 23 points was Pamela MacLeod (28). The seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Charles Legge with 20 points. On Sunday, the men played for the Rosebowl. The winner was Gordon Smith (15) 65, runner-up was Ian Murray (7) 66 and third was James Brady (14) 67. Several of the match play competitions were concluded during the week. The pairing of Ian Murray Snr and Jim O’Hara reached the final of both the Mitchell Shield (four ball better ball) and the Grantown Salver (foursomes). They defeated Peter Boyce Kenyon and Haydn Hughes to win the Grantown Salver but lost out to Bob Mitchell and Andrew MacLaren in the Mitchell Shield. Jean Gordon won the ladies singles match play defeating Kate Wright in the final to lift the Malcolm Salver.

On Monday, the ladies 9 hole Texas Scramble was won by the team of Jean Gordon and Helen Fraser. On Thursday, the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Jane Kerr with 21 points. On Sunday, the men competed for the Grey House Cup. The winner with 35 points was Ian Sloan (11); runner-up was John Swinden (25) with 34 points and third was Kevin Strathdee (6) with 31 points. The ladies played their September Extra Medal and the winner was Aileen Morgan (30) 77 net.

On Monday, the ladies played their September Medal. The winner was Pamela MacLeod (28) 75, runner-up was Dorothy McDonald (16) 76 and third was Jane Kerr (32) 78. On Tuesday the Seniors travelled north to Huntly for their annual outing. The winner on the day was Ian Sloan with 36 points, second was Colin Hill with 31 points and third was Charles Legge with 30 points. On Thursday, it was back to home soil for the weekly Seniors Stableford won by Kate Wright with 23 points. On Friday, the juniors played their final medal of the season. The winner was Kalen Clark (34) 69 and runner-up was Bruce Grant (36) 71. This result means that Kalen retains the Cameron Cup for the four best medals of the season with a total of 270 from Bruce Grant with a total of 285. On Saturday, the men from Kinloss came to Nethy to challenge our men but home advantage proved too much with the Abernethy men winning 4 – 0. On Sunday, the over 50s competed for the Frame Trophy. The winner was Ron Thornhill (19) 62; runner-up was Kate Wright (29) 66 and third was John Swinden (25) 70.

Week ending Sunday 2 September 2012

On Monday the ladies played their monthly 9 hole stableford. The winner with 18 points was Hannah McCook, second was Eliz Sloan 17 pts and third was Marion McCook 15 pts. On Thursday, the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Eliz Sloan with 20 points. On Sunday, the men played their September Medal. Winner was Gordon Smith (16) 65, runner-up was Andrew Chambers (24) 70 and third was Mike Wright (13) 73. This was the final counting medal for the Greenkeepers Cup which was retained by James Brady with a total of 271 for his best four medals, nine strokes clear of runner-up John Swinden.

The Seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Aileen Morgan with 19 points. On Saturday, we held an Open Greensomes for the ladies competing for Haydn’s Crystal. Winners were Hannah McCook (1) and Marion McCook (29) 66.8 net, runners-up were Aileen Morgan (30) and Heather Bantick (23) 69.2 and third were Karen Marshall (1) and Claire Cappocci (6) 71.0. The scratch prize went to Hilary Wardell and Lesley Nicholson 73 gross. Hannah McCook won the longest drive prize and Jean Gordon won nearest the pin. On Sunday, we hosted another Open, this time the ever popular Louise Mixed Foursomes. The late Louise’s sister Ray was on hand to present the Louise Shields to the winners Peter Lee and Mandy Lee (15.5) from Royal Dornoch with a net 64.5, runners-up were Jock Clark and Helen Lorimer (23) from Carrbridge net 69 and third was Albert Duffus and Sheena Duffus (19.5) from Forres net 71.5. The scratch prize went to James Grant and Debbie Grant with a gross 87.

On Monday, the ladies August Extra Medal was won by Pamela MacLeod (30) 68 and a 3 stroke cut in her handicap; runner-up was Eliz Sloan (17) 80 and third was Margaret Smith (23) 84. The Seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Ian Sloan with 24 points. On Saturday, the ladies competed for the Robinson Tray. The winner, continuing her good form from Monday, was Pamela MacLeod (27) 35 points; runner-up was Marie Hughes (22) 33 pts and third was Susan MacLaren (29) 32 pts. On Sunday, the ladies and men combined to compete for the Laing Trophy. The winner was Bob Mitchell (11) 37 points, runner-up was James Brady (14) 36 pts and third was John Dingwall (13) 34 pts bih.

The Seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Mike Wright with 21 points. On Sunday, we held our Men’s Open. Scratch prizes went to the holder Gordon Hay with 71, James Grant 72 and John McCook 74. The competition was won with a net 64 scored by three players. On countback, Malcolm McCreath (13) was the winner, Mikey Hay Smith (18) was second and Stewart Taylor (11) was third.

On Monday, the ladies completed their eclectic competition. Winner of the trophy with a net 68 was Marie Hughes, runner-up was Dorothy McDonald net 70. On Tuesday, the seniors invited the juniors to join them for a Texas Scramble. The winning team was Ian Sloan, Heather Bantick, Aileen Morgan and Alasdair Bisset. The weekly seniors 9 hole stableford on Thursday was won by Ron Thornhill with 20 points. On Saturday, the men and ladies played the re-arranged fixture for the Gordon Cup. The winner was Kenneth Waitt (8) 62, runner-up was James Brady (15) 64 and third was Christine Reynolds (24) 68. On Sunday, the men played their August Medal. James Brady went one better than yesterday and won the competition with a net 63. Runner-up was Allan Bantick (12) 65 and third was David Montgomery (15) 68.

On Monday, the ladies played their July Extra medal. The winner was Gillian Mitchell (15) 71bih, runner-up was Joanna Bissett (33) 71 and third was Margaret Smith (23) 77. On Thursday, the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Sue Philpott with 26 points. On Friday, the juniors played for the McLeod Cup. This trophy was first played for in 1972, 40 years ago. The winner on that occasion was James Grant. The winner this year was son of James, Bruce Grant (37) with 64 net. Runner-up was Alasdair Bisset (33) 69 net. On Sunday, the men competed for the Tipsy Trophy. The winner was John McCook (5) 64, runner-up was Mikey Hay Smith (19) 66 and third was John Dingwall (13) 67.

Wednesday, the wettest day of the week, was the day chosen for our Mixed Foursomes for the Save the Children Tournament. John McCook (7) and Marie Hughes (22) with a respectable net 68 will represent the club at the finals. All other scores have been omitted to save the blushes.   Thursday was the Junior Open. The trophy went to James Paterson (21) of Grantown with a net 62’ runner-up was Cameron Brown (22) 71bih and third was Ian Hill (6) 71. The scratch prize went to Calum Hill with a gross 70. The juniors were in action again on Saturday playing for the Humber Glover Trophy. The winner was Ryan Jeffrey (24) 60 net, runner-up was Cameron Brown (22) 68bih and third was Kalen Clark (34) 68. On Sunday, the men competed for the Bob Douglas Trophy. The winner with 36 points on countback was Robert Mitchell (11) from John McCook (6) and third with 35 points was Mike Wright (12).

Week Ending Sunday 15 July 2012

This was Club Championship week.    The juniors started the ball rolling on Wednesday and Thursday.   Kalen Clark (42)carded a net 55 on Wednesday to set the early pace in the handicap competition whilst Daniel Thom's gross 74 saw him take the early lead in the scratch competition.    Daniel matched his score with another 74 on Thursday to see him retain his Junior Champion title whilst Kalen's net 61 was good enough to win the junior handicap trophy.    On Saturday and Sunday, the men did battle in the morning.    After the first round, there was only one stroke between James Grant (73), David Thom (74) and Kevin Strathdee(74) but David and Kevin failed to repeat their Saturday performance on Sunday and James carded a 69 to retain his title of Club Champion.   In the handicap competition, John Swinden (26) set a blistering early pace with a net 63,   James O'Hara (12) with 65 was in contention and several players were only a few strokes away including John Dingwall (12)with 69 and Allan Bantick (12) with 70.    John and Allan both had net 67s on Sunday to finish first and second respectively.    The ladies played on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.    Sally Thom's gross 80 saw her open up a big lead from Gillian Mitchell with 87.   Sally maintained her form on Sunday with a gross 84 to Gillian's 90 meaning Sally retained her ladies Club Champion title.   In the handicap competition, Pamela MacLeod (31) led the field after the first day with a net 70, one stroke clear of Sue Philpott (31) and two clear of Gillian Mitchell (15).   On Sunday, a good net 69 from Sue Swinden (24) was not enough to disturb Pamela who again won the day with a net 67 to lift the trophy.

On Monday the ladies played their July Medal. The winner was Rona Smith (23) 74, runner-up was Dorothy McDonald (16) 77 and third was Margaret Smith (23) 78. On Wednesday the course was played in reverse. This fun evening was won by Matt McGlew with 32 points. On Thursday, the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Hamish Fraser with 23 points. On Friday we held our Seniors Open.The men’s scratch prize went to James Ingram (Boat) with a 73 and the ladies scratch winner was Gillian Mitchell with 83. The competition winner was John Lockhart (9) from Bathgate with a net 65; runner-up was Malcolm McCreath (12) 66, third was Bob Mouat (15) 67bih, fourth was Mike Wright (12) 67 and fifth was Ken Dick (17) from Craigie Hill with 68. On Saturday, the junior medal was won by Bruce Grant (37) with net 78 in very wet conditions. The continuing rain caused the cancellation of Sunday’s Gordon Cup competition which has been rescheduled for 4th August.

On Monday the ladies played their June Extra Medal. Winner was Heather Bantick (24) 65 and 2 stroke reduction in handicap; runner-up was Jane Kerr (32) 75, and third was Pamela MacLeod (31) 77. Wednesday was the third and final Midsummer 9 hole stableford. Winner on the night was Mike Wright with 23 points and a 2 stroke reduction in handicap. Winner of the series on an eclectic basis was Susan Swinden with 27 points. The Seniors Stablefod on Thursday was won by the rain.    Three players battled their way round the course with Heather Bantick and Charles Grant both coming in with 13 points.   On Friday, the junior medal was won by Kalen Clark (42) 65 net.    On Saturday, the ladies held their annual outing.  This year, the venue was Muir of Ord.   A great time was had by all and Gillian Mitchell won the competition.   On Sunday, the men played their July Medal. Winner was James Brady (15) 70 bih, runner-up was Kevin Strathdee (6) 70, and third was John Dingwall (13) 72.

On Monday the ladies played their June Medal. Winner was Jane Kerr (32) 71, runner-up was Eliz Sloan (17) 72 and third was Pamela MacLeod (31) 73. . Wednesday was the second Midsummer 9 hole stableford. Winner was Susan Swinden (25) 21 pts. The weekly Seniors Stableford on Thursday was won by Stan Foulkes with 21 pts. Also on Thursday the ladies made the short journey along the road to Boat to play the Boat of Garten ladies. The result was an honourable draw. On Saturday, the ladies battled through the rain for the Beaton Bowl. Winner was Heather Bantick (24) with a 72, runner up was Jane Kerr (32) 74, third was Gillian Mitchell (15) with 75. The rain caused the shortening of the competition for the men on Sunday and the Centenary Trophy was played for over 14 holes. Winner was Kevin Strathdee (6) 51, four players finished with a net 52 but on countback the runner-up was Haydn Hughes (16) and third was Mike Wright (14).

On Monday the ladies first round of their Eclectic Trophy competition. Off to the best start was Eliz Sloan (17) with a net 70, second was Marie Hughes (22) 72 and third was Dorothy McDonald (16) 73. Wednesday was the first of the Midsummer 9 hole stablefords. The winner with 18 points was Kate Wright (29) with 18 points beating husband Mike (13) on countback. The Seniors 9 hole stableford on Thursday was won by Ian Sloan with 22 points. Ian (12) continued his good form on Sunday in the Ben Flood Trophy competition winning with 38 pts, second was Kevin Strathdee (6) 35 pts bih and John Swinden was third also with 35pts.

On Monday the ladies played their 2 club competition. The winner was Jane Kerr. Jane continued her good form winning the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford on Thursday with 24 points. Midweek, the men from Craggan made the short journey to Nethy. Home advantage helped the Abernethy men to a 3.5 to 0.5 win. On Saturday the ladies competed for the Mustard Trophy. Winner was Eliz Sloan (17) net 69, runner-up was Heather Bantick (24) 71 and third was Jean Gordon (22) 73. On Sunday, the men played their June Medal. Winner was James Brady (14) 67, runner-up was Howard Edge (18) 68bih and third was John Swinden (25) 68.

On Monday the ladies played their 9 hole stableford, the winner was Jean Gordon (23) with 20 points and a cut in her handicap to 22. runner up was Kate Wright with 17 points. Saturday was the rearranged date of the Helensburgh Shield, postponed in April due to snow. This was won by Haydn Hughes (16) with 34 pts, runner-up was Jim O’Hara (12) 33ptsbih and third was Peter Strathdee (15) 33 pts. Sunday was the Ladies Open. Winner of the scratch trophy with a gross 83 was Nia Morrison from Carrbridge. The competition was won by Sue Philpott (32) 68, runner-up was Colette Kirk (25) from Bothwell Castle with 69bih and third was Eliz Sloan (16) 69.

On Monday 21st the ladies played the Coronation Fours.  The winners were Fiona Hunter and Elaine Hill with 37 points, runners up were Gillian Mitchell and Heather Bantick with 35 points. The Junior Medal on Friday was a very close run affair with Kalen Clark (42) just taking the honour from Bruce Grant (37) on countback with both boys scoring a net 70. On Saturday, we played an Open Texas Scramble for the CNPA Trophy. The winning team were Gordon Hay, John Campbell, Gavin Hay and Andrew Hay with a net 51.3, runners-up were William Moffat, Jim Moffat, Cameron Pirie and John Lees with net 55.2 and third were Sheila Grant, Pamela MacLeod, Jim O’Hara and Ian Murray with a net 56.1. On Sunday, the men played their Belhaven Qualifying Medal. Winner was Gordon Smith (16) 63, runner-up was Howard Edge (18) 65 and third was Ian Sloan (12) 66.

On Monday, the ladies played their May Extra Medal. The winner was Margaret Smith (22) 70, runner-up was Heather Bantick (24) 72 and third was Marie Hughes (21) 75. On Tuesday, the Seniors travelled the short distance to Carrbridge for a match against the Carrbridge Seniors. We narrowly avoided a whitewash losing 5 – 1. On Thursday, the seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Heather Bantick with 21 points. On Saturday, the ladies competed for the Fraser Cup. The winner was Sue Philpott (34) with 40 stableford points, her new handicap is now 32. runner up was Susan MacLaren with 37 points and third was Sally Thom with 36 stableford points. On Sunday, the men competed for the Norman Stone Salver. With the sun at last shining, several good scores were returned. Winner was Malcolm McCreath (13) 63, runner-up was Charles Grant (19) 65 and third was Jim O’Hara (12) 66.      The ladies then played their counterparts from Dornoch in the 5th round of the Mail on Sunday National Match Play competition, our ladies winning 4 - 1.

On Monday, the Ladies May medal was won by Dot McDonald (16) 71 bih, runner-up was Susan MacLaren (29) 71 and third was Marie Hughes (21) 72. On Friday, the April Junior Medal, postponed earlier because of the weather, was played as a 9 hole stableford and won by Kalen Clark with 18 pts. On Sunday, the men and ladies played the Charities Mixed Foursomes Open. Our charity this year is the Eve Appeal for women’s cancer research and twenty teams battled the wind for the trophies. The winners were Peter Strathdee & Ena Meldrum (19) 71, runners-up were Charles Grant & Susan Baldwin (18) 74bih, third were John McCook & Marie Hughes (14) 74 and fourth were Ian Murray Snr & Margaret Smith (18.5) 74.5.

On Monday, Marie Hughes won the ladies SLGA brooch and putting competition with net 70, Aileen Morgan was runner up. The putting was won by Gillian Mitchell and Aileen Morgan jointly with 33 putts. On Tuesday, the Seniors Mulligan competition was won by Elizabeth Fleming with 23 pts. The Seniors 9 hole stableford on Thursday was won by Michael Wright with 20 points. On Sunday, the men played their May Medal. In a close competition the winner was James A Grant (3) 65 bih, runner-up was Jim O’Hara (12) 65 and third was David Thom (7) 67.

On Monday, the ladies 9 hole April stableford was won by Elizabeth Sloan on a countback from Heather Bantick - both players scored 16 points . Third was Margaret Smith with 15 points. On Wednesday, the ladies played the Carrbridge ladies for the Bridges Challenge trophy. In a match restricted to 9 holes because of the weather the Abernethy ladies won the trophy by 2.5 to 1.5. On Saturday, the ladies were again in match play mode as they travelled to Huntly for the fourth round of the Mail on Sunday National Competition. In a close fought match, the Abernethy ladies won through 3 –2. On Sunday, both men and ladies competed for the Fowler Cup. On a high scoring day, all the honours went to the men. Winner of the trophy was John McCook (6) 71; runner-up was Robert Mitchell (11) 72bih and third was Ian Sloan (12) 72.

On Monday, the ladies played their April Extra Medal. Winner was Pamela MacLeod (30) 73, second was Eliz Sloan (16) 75bih and third was Jane Kerr (31) 75. The seniors weekly 9 hole stableford was won by Eliz Sloan with 20 points. On Saturday, the first of our Opens, the mixed greensomes, was played in very dreich conditions. Mrs Rene Pountney, the original donor of the trophy, was on hand to present the trophy to the winners, local players John McCook and Marie Hughes (12.8) 62.2. Runners-up were Bruce Davies and Aileen Anderson of Pumpherston (26.8) 64.2, third were last year’s winners Ian Murray and Sheila Grant (16.2) 64.8 and fourth were Ian Campbell and Susan Stuart of Kintore (9) 66. The men were in action again on Sunday competing for the Speyside Sports Salver. The trophy was won by Howard Edge (19) 66 beating Peter Boyce-Kenyon (22) 66 on countback. Third was Kevin Strathdee (5) 68.

Week ending Sunday 15 April 2012

On Monday, the ladies flag competition ended in a dead heat when both Marie Hughes and Margaret Smith used their final stroke to putt out on the last hole. The Seniors Weekly Stableford finally got underway this week and despite the wet conditions, the winning score was an impressive 23 strokes scored by both Ron Thornhill and David Kerr with Ron taking the honours on countback. Unfortunately, the return of the snow caused the cancellation of the men’s weekend competition which has been re-arranged for Saturday 2 June.

Week ending Sunday 8 April 2012

On Monday, the ladies just finished their Hidden Hole competition as the snow arrived. The winner was Pamela MacLeod. Unfortunately, the snow lay long enough to cause the cancellation of the opening match of the Seniors Weekly Stableford. However, we were back to normal by Sunday when the men and ladies competed for the Nethybridge Hotel Trophy. The winner was Jim O’Hara (12) 65; runner-up was Kate Wright (29+2) 66bih and third was Kevin Strathdee (6) 66. Both Kate and Kevin have their handicap reduced by 1 stroke.

Week ending Sunday 1 April 2012

On Monday, the ladies started the season gently with a 9 hole Captain’s Surprise won by Margaret Smith with 16 stableford points. On Saturday the ladies took on their counterparts from Fortrose & Rosemarkie in the Mail on Sunday National Match Play competition coming out victors 3 -2. Sunday was the first of the medals for men and ladies. In cold blustery conditions, the men’s medal was won by Neil Williams (15) 67bih from John Swinden (25) also 67. In third place was Kevin Strathdee (6) 68. The ladies competition was won by Susan Swinden (25) 69, runner-up was Margaret Smith (22) 74 and third was Helen Fraser (35) 77.

In sharp contrast to the last few years, the flag was raised at Abernethy Golf Club in glorious sunshine by this year’s captain, Michael Wright. The Captain’s team then played the Lady captain’s team and, despite the Captain not winning his own match, his team were victorious by 5 matches to 3.
